Not Just A Goof
A 30th anniversary documentary uncovering why A Goofy Movie became one of Disney's most beloved cult classics — and the deeply human father-son story that made it last.
Five years. One goofy dream. Fully realized.
I produced Not Just a Goof from initial concept through Disney+ release — a journey that turned a personal passion project into an official Disney documentary.
As Producer, my role was part problem-solver, part navigator, guiding the film through multiple stages and ultimately to Disney+. I filmed, edited, and even financed key portions of the documentary while managing the team's creative and logistical challenges. Beyond production, I oversaw marketing and distribution efforts, positioning the film to reach a global audience. The role demanded equal parts creative vision, operational grit, and an unwavering commitment to finishing what we started.
From cult favorite to official Disney documentary
The idea began with a simple observation: A Goofy Movie (1995), despite being one of Disney's most modestly budgeted animated features, had earned one of the studio's most loyal fan bases. For a generation of kids, its honest and flawed father-son relationship hit different than anything else Disney had made.
What started as a passion-driven tribute evolved over five years into a fully authorized Disney production. I sourced interviews with the original writers, directors, animators, and voice cast — and surfaced the film's underdog production story for the first time. The project included special screenings at D23 and Walt Disney Animation Studios before its global Disney+ debut.
The production required navigating Disney's internal approval process, preserving creative independence, and honoring the fan community without losing editorial clarity.
A Streaming Hit With Staying Power
Not Just A Goof was licensed by Disney+ and climbed to #3 on the platform. It became a cultural flashpoint, featured in press, embraced by fans, and celebrated by the very studio that created its subject. What started as an indie passion project became canon.
For the generation who grew up with A Goofy Movie, this was the ultimate reward: seeing a story we believed in resonate with so many around the world.
Disney+ release. #3 on the platform.
Not Just a Goof exceeded every expectation — reaching #3 on Disney+ in its opening window, earning an Annie Award nomination, and screening at both D23 and Walt Disney Animation Studios before a global streaming release. It proved that a passion-driven independent documentary could earn a place alongside major Disney productions.
